Mahmood humiliated! Now her migrant climbdown will cost us £10 billion
Epizode
In Tuesday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the Home Secretary’s climbdown on visas and the missed opportunity that could cost the taxpayer £10bn. Camilla describes the about-turn as “a climbdown on a supposed crackdown” suggesting that Shabana Mahmood has been “bullied out of her immigration crackdown by the Lefties in Cabinet”. Tim claims that the “real controversy is not the workers that came, but the dependants”, which he points out the Home Secretary avoided discussing in her address on Monday. They also discuss whether the announcement means that “Starmerism” is officially dead, and whether there is a Blue-Labour movement within the party. In Monday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla and Tim are joined by Hannah Furness, The Telegraph’s Royal Editor. They discuss Andy Burnham’s suggestion that he would consider issuing a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. The trio talk about how his remarks could affect the remainder of the King’s nine-day Caribbean tour. Hannah tells the hosts that, although protests have so far been relatively muted, the Prime Minister’s comments have put the monarch in “a quite uncomfortable position”. Camilla and Tim also discuss Emma Reynolds’s suggestion that employers are not “working people”, reigniting the row over Labour’s definition of the term and who should bear the burden of tax rises. In today’s episode of The Royal T, Camilla Tominey and Hannah Furness speak to Arthur Edwards, a royal photographer who has been following the British Royal Family for the past 50 years, ahead of the release of his new book ‘Cup of Tea, Arthur?: My Extraordinary 50 Years Photographing the Royal Family’. He runs through some of his biggest photo scoops, including the first time he met and photographed Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as his disagreements with then Prince Charles, who Arthur says has “matured” over the years as he has taken the throne. Arthur, who works as The Sun’s principle royal photographer for over half a century, also explains why he thinks the Royal Family needs a figure like Prince Harry, who he once considered the institution’s “star”, and why Arthur believes reconciliation in the form the Duke of Sussex would like it, won’t happen. In Thursday’s episode of The Daily T, Tim Stanley and Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg are joined by Allister Heath, the Editor of The Sunday Telegraph, to discuss John Healey’s maiden Budget. Allister described it as a “nothing-burger” of a Budget and said that “a lot of things will get worse” over the next two years as a result of the Chancellor’s measures. The three weighed up the prospect of the nation going to the polls in the near future – despite the PM’s denials – with yesterday’s Budget seeming to be a holding operation. Allister said Andy Burnham “wants to go down in history” like other Labour prime ministers and would need a mandate to implement many of the policies he wants to introduce. In Wednesday’s episode of The Daily T, Tim Stanley and Jacob Rees-Mogg are joined by financial journalist and host of the Investing Unlocked podcast Georgie Frost to react to John Healey’s maiden Budget as Chancellor. Speaking immediately after the Chancellor’s speech, Tim welcomed some of the measures, such as the winter fuel payment, but criticised how Mr Healey was funding it, saying that the increased taxes on landlords and banks “are essentially a raid on the asset-owning middle classes”. On the issue of military spending, Jacob was critical, saying: “He’s got no more on defence than there was when he resigned. And yet he’s staying in office and in charge of it. That’s a pretty awkward position for him to be in.” The Telegraph is the Publisher Podcast Awards' Podcast Publisher of the Year 2026 ► Watch back our Daily T’s Autumn Budget YouTube livestream here. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! In Tuesday’s episode of The Daily T, Tim Stanley and Jacob Rees-Mogg are joined by Sir Ben Wallace, the former Tory defence secretary. Sir Ben has accused the Government of falsifying spending on the defence budget in order to appear closer to reaching the pledged 3 per cent of GDP by 2030. He criticised the Government for taking only a superficial step towards the target and falling behind its European allies. He said: “Germany, Poland, the Baltics, Scandinavians, have put their money where their mouth is. Denmark even cancelled a public holiday to increase tax revenues to fund it. We have done press releases.” Tim and Jacob also discuss Andy Burnham’s first 100 days in office, exploring the difficulties associated with coming in in mid-term. They explore the changes he has made and the promises he has made for the future – and whether a snap election could be on the horizon. The two former chancellors of the exchequer examine why Labour’s likely approach of raising taxes on banks and businesses could stifle economic growth, and why reducing the national debt is so important. Sir Jeremy is critical of Labour’s public spending and argues that reform is urgently needed. “I think we should have a new rule, a fiscal rule, that outside emergencies governments will never increase public spending by faster than the growth rate of the economy,” he says. In Thursday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley are joined by Reform UK’s Danny Kruger to discuss the party’s decision to report ITV to the police over its undercover sting. The MP for East Wiltshire claims that “the law has been flagrantly broken, as in this case, outrageous deception by ITV, including breaking electoral law, pretending to be canvassers”. Kruger, Reform UK’s head of policy, who is helping prepare the party for government, also claimed that the party was facing a concerted campaign against it from the press, trade unions and even the House of Lords. He called on Conservatives and their voters to back Reform as the only realistic way for the Right to win at the next general election. Amid a series of high-profile scandals and expulsions, Camilla asked Kruger whether the greatest threat to Reform’s bid for government came from within the party itself. An ITV spokesman said: “ITV stands by its journalism. The programme Undercover: A Year In Reform was produced in compliance with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, relevant laws, and its broadcast is in the public interest. “All journalists were instructed to operate within this framework, and did so under the supervision of the programme’s producers. In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the ITV News investigation into Reform UK, which saw councillors filmed on camera expressing racist and sexist views. They discuss whether this expose is a case of “a few bad apples” or reflects an attitude within the political party itself. Camilla and Tim react to the views expressed by the Reform councillors in the undercover film, and explore whether those views are truly reflective of parts of electorate, and the influence of mass migration on attitudes towards nationalism and race. In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss Andy Burnham’s “gaffe-laden” return to Prime Minister’s Questions after the party conferences. They look at how Burnham doubled-down on his claims of Russian interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum vote after Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, challenged him about putting “his foot in his mouth”. They discuss how his firm stance against a deal with the Green Party over its “Zionism is racism” motion might lead to a rowback from the PM at a general election. They also dissect Burnham’s more sympathetic exchange with Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader. Tim deems Burnham to be “hypocritical” when factoring in his earlier praise of Badenoch for calling out Reform over some of its members’ comments on national identity and race. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Jacob Rees-Mogg are joined by David Davis, the former Brexit secretary. They discuss Andy Burnham’s comments over Russian interference with the vote – and the PM’s subsequent backtracking. Mr Davis accused the Prime Minister of politics that are “performative, not real”, adding that “ as a mayor, he got away with saying what he liked and nobody challenged him”. Camilla suggested that Andy Burnham could reinvigorate the Right if he pushes a campaign to rejoin the EU. Plus as the anniversary of Sir David Amess’ murder approaches this week, Camilla, Jacob and David discussed the safety of MPs and what it is like to be in the public eye and be targeted for your views. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey is joined by Jacob Rees-Mogg to discuss Andy Burnham’s “obsession” with Brexit. The Prime Minister has told MPs in Parliament that it is his “duty” to pursue a closer relationship with the EU and claimed in an interview that Russia interfered with the referendum in 2016. Jacob wants the PM to “grow up” and stop fixating on Brexit – and describes the tactic as an act “straight out of Trump’s [political] playbook”. Camilla and Jacob also address the reported £35bn black hole in the forthcoming Budget and the ballooning welfare bill that should be higher up on Mr Burnham’s list than Brexit. Nigel Farage’s pledge to shut down the asylum system under a Reform UK government is also discussed, with Jacob agreeing that such robust action is needed to address the issue of small-boat crossings and backlog of processing asylum claimants. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! In today’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley speak to Andrew Griffith, the shadow chancellor, from the Conservative Party conference. Camilla and Tim challenge Griffith on the party’s pledges to cut welfare and scrap inheritance tax on family homes, with Tim asking how he would respond to a claim that he was “repeating Liz Truss’s mistake of promising something that country is not in a position to fiscally underwrite”. The shadow chancellor defends his party’s policies, saying they have been “forensically set out” and are not a repeat of the Truss mini-Budget. He claims that “balancing the books runs in [his] DNA” and clarifies that his aim to abolish a tax in every Budget under a Conservative government is an ambition, not a promise. Griffith also denies that the Conservatives have regained a reputation as “the nasty party”, and criticises Labour’s “hope handout” strategy when it comes to unemployment and benefits. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! Today’s episode of The Daily T reacts to Zack Polanski’s defeat in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election and whether or not this will lead to the Green Party leader being ousted. They discuss how much damage last week’s “Zionism is Racism” motion had done to the party and Mr Polanski’s absence has undermined his reputation and standing within the party. Tim considers whether despite defeat in the by-election the result cements the Green Party as the Labour alternative for Left-wing voters. In today’s episode of The Daily T from the final day of the Conservative Party conference, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley give their reaction to party leader Kemi Badenoch’s powerful and punchy speech to delegates and supporters. Camilla believes it displayed a more human side to the Tory leader as she discussed race, identity politics, defectors of her own party to Reform UK as well as her policy announcement to scrap inheritance tax on family homes. Camilla and Tim compare Badenoch’s closing address to Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s speech at last week’s Labour party conference, and the differences in tone and policy gaps in the PM’s rousing speech. Within their analysis, Camilla and Tim also reference The Telegraph’s exclusive story on the conclusion of Reform UK’s internal investigation, clearing senior party figures of any law-breaking after an undercover investigation by Channel 4 journalists. ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership! In Sunday’s episode of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the Conservative Party conference with Tony Diver, the Political Editor. They look at where the Tories stand in the polls and discuss what it needs to do to claim back its position as the opposition party in the eyes of the public. Meanwhile, Nick Tyrone, the author of The Rise of Reform, joins Camilla and Tim to examine the party’s influence on the Conservatives in the run up to the 2024 general election and beyond. On the day that hundreds of prisoners are released early and the UK’s “one in, one out” migrant deal with France ends, The Daily T examines the state of the nation under Andy Burnham. Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley discuss the paradox of a Prime Minister who wants more devolution while pushing for a referendum on rejoining the EU and following the rules set by Brussels. Tim suggests Mr Burnham’s push for proportional representation could be to the detriment of the Labour Party, saying it is more important to him to have a permanent coalition centre-Left establishment in Britain than it is for Labour to win majorities. Camilla and Tim also note the shift in Labour’s policy regarding Israel and Palestine marked by the absence of Ed Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, from the Labour Friends of Israel event and the lack of comment from the Prime Minister so far on the Flydubai hijacking attempt. ► Subscribe to our new Daily T YouTube channel: youtube.com/@dailytpodcast ► Get more exclusive Daily T content from The Daily T+ membership!
